Don't forget you can find a collection of great web apps on our web app review blog which now has nearly 400 subscribers and 200 Twitter followers. It's worth a look.

We did have a small period over the last few weeks when it didn't get updated (sorry about that), but we're back on the case now.

Our Ethos (Web Development Process)

Posted: 31st Aug 2009

I thought I would just share a bit about how we think the web development process should work - from when a client submits a brief to the site being handed over (and beyond). We are calling this the Halogy Ethos because it forms the basis of why we built Halogy.

Well, we have been getting along nicely with the Halogy Branding. The brand guidelines and the logo are complete, and we're now working on the web design. We have so much we could tell you about the plans for Halogy (the new exciting easy-to-use CMS), but for now we have to keep our mouths shut sorry.

The brand and a full explanation of what to expect from Halogy will be released shortly. It's going to be amazing.

Web Developer's Cup of Tea

Posted: 6th Apr 2009

blog-tea

We all get those days when we really just don't feel like doing any work. There might be a lot to do but for some reason we just can't really be bothered - the motivation is low and the lethargy is high. How do we snap out of it and do some work?

A cup of tea and a good tune. It's worked for me. Tea makes all the difference, and while sipping on a nice cup of hot brew you can put on your favourite Johnny Cash album (maybe not for some) and crack on with that difficult Jquery AJAX sign up form with field auto-complete and CSS3 rounded corners. It works!

Simplicity in Design (1)

Posted: 31st Mar 2009

We're starting a series on Simplicity in Design. We thought we'd start off with a couple of sites that we really like which have very simple designs.

blog-sites

What do you think it is about these sites that makes them so simple? Is it the colour palette? Is it the Information Architecture? Why is simplicity in design so important?

12 Free Garden Textures

Posted: 16th Mar 2009

In web design we often use textures from photos to give a website a certain look and feel. For example, a site about gardening may benefit from a grass texture in the footer, or maybe a wood grain background (was very popular in 2008!).

Please make it easy to use!

Posted: 11th Mar 2009

blog-form

At Haloweb we are obsessed with making things easy to use and keeping things simple. Right from the design and tidiness of our code through to the layout of forms and buttons. The web has to be easy to use and we need to be user focused and not 'techy' in our approach to building websites and applications. Halogy has been built with this in mind. If something doesn't make sense or is complicated, we'll scrap it and start again. Usability is a value of Haloweb.

Select all checkboxes with JQuery

Posted: 6th Mar 2009

blog-checkboxes

We have just built a cool 'select all checkboxes' function in JQuery and released the code. It is for administrators of Halogy to be able to simply grant permissions to their users at a category level, but if they want to they can open up the category and grant individual permissions.

CodeIgniter - Custom errors using the Form Validation class

Posted: 4th Mar 2009

TECHY WARNING - This post has techy-talk, be warned

Recently I've been using the new Form Validation Class on CodeIgniter and though overall it is much better than the previous validation class I found a gripe with it recently when trying to add custom error messages using the "validation_errors()" helper.

New portfolio section using JQuery Carousel

Posted: 3rd Mar 2009

We have just launched a new Portfolio section called Our Work. It uses a (quite heavily) adapted version of jCarouselLite. We are quite chuffed with it, and also it worked first time in IE6!

A cool new AJAX search feature

Posted: 2nd Mar 2009

blog-autocomplete

We have just implemented a cool new tag based AJAX search feature to the Halogy blog system. It searches tags or keywords that are attached to the blog posts, and then returns the top results underneath. Like the Google "Suggestions" system.

Branding - what's it all about?

Posted: 1st Mar 2009

We have begun work on branding the Halogy product (this is the service that provides everything you need for a website). But what is branding all about?

You have read all about how the Halogy product works I'm sure, but branding it in order to sell it is a whole new world. We want it to look great, but we want the unique selling points to shine through - the fact it is easy to use, the fact it pretty much covers everything most people would need from an off-the-shelf website solution, the fact that it is 100% British!.

Over the next few weeks we will keep you updated on the branding process and explain how this kind of thing works, and how it could work for your business.

CodeIgniter - building web sites fast!

Posted: 1st Mar 2009

What is CodeIgniter?

I have been using CodeIgniter for about 6 months now and I really love it. It is basically a framework that you can build web applications on quickly. A bit like Symfony or the Zend Framework it allows developers to not have to re-invent the wheel every time they build a blog or a shopping cart system. We have built so many web applications which would normally have taken months, thanks to CodeIgniter framework.
