Nice Transparent Loading GIF

Posted: 24th Feb 2010

Loader

We've all seen those loading images when you click on links in AJAX enabled websites, such as Twitter. They are essential, particularly when coding websites with AJAX functionality because the user needs to know if something is actually happening.

So having one of these loading images is useful, and they can often be 'borrowed' from the web. However the problem with a lot of these images is that they don't work very well with different backgrounds because of transparency issues.

Well I spent a while making one the other day in Photoshop that works nicely on many backgrounds and thought I'd share it with the world.

Feel free to use this image, let me know where you've used it if you do. I've used it in Project Bubble and other sites.

Right click on the image above and Save As...

Jquery Lightbox for HTML?

Posted: 22nd Apr 2009

We were trying to find a lightbox plugin that works well for HTML (not just images). Normally we would use Shadowbox but they do charge for a commercial license. So another great plugin one can use and easily adapt for use in your own site - is Facebox which looks and feels just like the Facebook popup. We have adapted it lots to make it work well with our apps and it's great. Check it out here.

Growl for Mac OS X

I just downloaded Adium for Mac OS X and it's a way of chatting to users of multiple Instant Messaging networks for example MSN, Google Chat etc. But I've found that through installing "Growl" I get notifications pop up in the bottom right of the screen for all sorts of other applications I have installed, not just new chat conversations but also things like file transfers. It's great! I love Growl.

Testing Websites in Different Browsers

What is the best way to test your website on lots of browsers?

It's very important to make sure the websites you build work across platforms and browsers, but it's not easy to do this unless you have a room full of computers. I use a Mac and I would never buy a PC just for testing stuff (I'd never buy a PC full stop). So what if I need to test in Internet Explorer 8, or Conquerer in Linux for example?

Well we use a variety of tests to make sure our sites are always working nicely in lots of browsers across different platforms - then we can guarantee our work is fully tested. Most of the time we use Virtual Box which is amazing and free, but also for a few bucks you can get a day pass with Litmus which is great for getting screenshots on practically every browser. Any other ways you can think of? We'd like to know.

Jquery Dropdown Menu

Posted: 3rd Apr 2009

blog-dropdown

We have just revised the drop down menu on our CMS. We wanted something that had a really small filesize, was really simple, fast, worked in all browsers and used Jquery. Previously we had been using something that was quite slow and were finding glitches with it in IE6. Now we have found something REALLY simple and it justs uses Jquery to add and remove classes. The CSS is simpler too!

Check it out here.

Campaign Monitor

We have been working on some HTML emails and we just thought we'd quickly share a tool that we've been using to test them. It's called Campaign Monitor and is a simple and free tool that allows you to upload a zip of images and the HTML and then send a test to up to 5 different accounts (e.g. Hotmail, Outlook etc). Check it out.
